Winter Is Here! – November 2010

Hello again!

I don’t know what your weather situation is, but here, it is definitely winter – we had about 2½ cm of snow on the weekend (that’s about 1 inch) and dustings daily since then. The lowest recent temperatures were around -10C (14F), but at least it’s getting back up to around freezing during the days. Today was a real mixed bag – started out with fog and some new snow, but now it’s cloudless and sunny. Winter is really here.

We have been experimenting with some WordPress systems, for example, how to work with multiple websites all on autopilot from a main site. That is supposed to provide an easier functionality to make multiple blogs with the content multiplied over the slave blogs. I have to say that it gets fairly complicated, and I personally don’t like the results – they look exactly like what they are – copies with no redeeming value. There is supposed to be some SEO benefit, but I won’t sacrifice my principles for a few SEO points.

The fallout from the investigations above is a new website, called “The Internet Monetized“. Its purpose is to discover and publicise opportunities to make money passively online – if you think that is a good idea (I like it personally!) take a look at the site. You will find it at http://internetmonetized.com, but be aware – it is really new, it came online just this past weekend, and there are still many rough edges.

Also, you will discover (if you go that deep in this website) that we have updated our list of websites. There are some interesting things there (and probably some not, depending on your personal likes and dislikes).

Take a look around, if you haven’t already.

Ciao!

Current Events

We ran into some “stormy weather” in February and March – one of our hosting suppliers had a problem with Trojans in the system, and we went through all sorts of shenanigans to try to clean up the damage and reduce the potential that it happens again. They said that it came from “break ins” on one or more of our sites, but we never saw any evidence of actual entry into any of our systems. In addition to that, on the same host, we have “issues” with the automatic upgrade from a lower version of WordPress to version 2.9.2. The problem only seems to exist on this particular host (we use five different ones), and we have not found a solution, other than not to make the upgrade. We’re hoping that the WordPress 3.0 upgrade will cure the problem. The only other solution we can see is to move the blogs to another server, and that involves a lot of work!

In other matters, we have re-established the original web-hosting.jimmycraig.biz sub-domain as http://webhostingbyjimmycraig.com so that it can stand alone. It is referenced more than once in Webmaster Refources and Info, which is still being re-established from the remaining files of the original http://webmaster-resources.info. We also have started moving the Bulgaria Realtor blog from the WordPress 2.5.1 blog.good2004.biz to the main directory at Good 2004 dot biz. This should allow us to improve the rankings of the Google PR 3 site and the blog together. A sub-domain generally will not be ranked by Google. But, it is possible: for example, maps.google.com has a PageRank of 9 and translate.google.com has a PageRank of 8.

The relocation of I Don’t Want To Get Old dot com continues, but the WP 2.9.2 upgrade problems struck here, and progress is much slower than we would have liked.

There is also a new blog called Who Is Jimmy Craig dot com which was created to centralise most of the biographical information about Yours Truely.

That’s about it for now. Hope to see you again soon!
