Spring 2011

Hi again! Things have been hectic this spring! We have moved (physically) the things from our casa vacanze in Italy to our new residence in Switzerland – which itself is down the mountain into the valley from where we were!

We also have some new sites and have retired a few that (unfortunately) you would not recognise the name of! The new sites are (starting with the latest) http://jimmycraigwebsites.ch – this is a home page that we are using to experiment with some new things we wanted to try out. Another recent addition is GEOCOGEN AG, which is a corporate site for the same company that is running GEOCOGEN as a technically-oriented blog. Another new site is Iliana’s Blog, a dual-language site (Bulgarian and English) that is designed to be different things to different people – a cookbook site, a social site for Iliana’s friends and family, and (we hope) an income-producing site.

We added a few blogs onto established sites where we took over the maintenance:

  • the Google PageRank 4 site ICEC.ch is the home of the International Clean Energy Consortium and the domain http://icec.info now redirects to the home site. ICEC is the parent company of GEOCOGEN AG
  • UNISEO.org is the PageRank 5 home page for the UN-recognised NGO International Sustainable Energy Organisation and we have added a blog with a similar name http://uniseo.info and similar subjects to try to get some of the traffic away from the Lake Iseo vacation hotels, etc. in Italy
  • We also added an integrated blog into the PageRank 4 CMDC to recover some credibility for the website, bring it back into a reasonable ranking position, and get some more interesting material on line

We also added a personal site for my son, David, called David’s Birthday, with the idea that we could accumulate some things there that will remain interesting over the years.

That’s been about enough for the time being – but we are approaching the opening of La Maison d’Yvette’s online store – at the same time that we re-open the brick-and-mortar store here in Switzerland (relocated from Italy). That will be exciting! Stay tuned, and read the LMDY blog and the online sales site LMDY Shop every now and then to see how far along we are with the project.

Current Events

We ran into some “stormy weather” in February and March – one of our hosting suppliers had a problem with Trojans in the system, and we went through all sorts of shenanigans to try to clean up the damage and reduce the potential that it happens again. They said that it came from “break ins” on one or more of our sites, but we never saw any evidence of actual entry into any of our systems. In addition to that, on the same host, we have “issues” with the automatic upgrade from a lower version of WordPress to version 2.9.2. The problem only seems to exist on this particular host (we use five different ones), and we have not found a solution, other than not to make the upgrade. We’re hoping that the WordPress 3.0 upgrade will cure the problem. The only other solution we can see is to move the blogs to another server, and that involves a lot of work!

In other matters, we have re-established the original web-hosting.jimmycraig.biz sub-domain as http://webhostingbyjimmycraig.com so that it can stand alone. It is referenced more than once in Webmaster Refources and Info, which is still being re-established from the remaining files of the original http://webmaster-resources.info. We also have started moving the Bulgaria Realtor blog from the WordPress 2.5.1 blog.good2004.biz to the main directory at Good 2004 dot biz. This should allow us to improve the rankings of the Google PR 3 site and the blog together. A sub-domain generally will not be ranked by Google. But, it is possible: for example, maps.google.com has a PageRank of 9 and translate.google.com has a PageRank of 8.

The relocation of I Don’t Want To Get Old dot com continues, but the WP 2.9.2 upgrade problems struck here, and progress is much slower than we would have liked.

There is also a new blog called Who Is Jimmy Craig dot com which was created to centralise most of the biographical information about Yours Truely.

That’s about it for now. Hope to see you again soon!
